In 1990 he began studying under Carl Jackson (Jackson's Karate Institute), a well-known instructor and state champion in Kumite (1980), and received his black belt in 1994. After receiving his black belt Sensei Dotson moved on to also study Bushi-Jiu-Jitsu, Eskrima/Contact Weapon Defense, Kali, and numerous other areas of defense in direct relation to his law enforcement career of more than 20 years. In February of 2003, Sensei Jay Dotson opened the Karate Do Academy at the Muncie Family YMCA (now at the corners of Mulberry and Howard Streets) which quickly grew from three students to seventeen in less than 6-months. In addition to learning karate, students at the Karate Do Academy learn a wide-variety of empty hand techniques for self defense plus weapons, sticks, and more. Sensei Ballinger: Mr. Ballinger had started his training by the young age of 14. His initial contact with martial arts came when he joined Armstrong's Karate Dojo in Selma, IN. He and his brother trained under Mr. Tim Armstrong from 1985-1991. As he went up the rank system under Mr. Armstrong he was crossed trained in several systems like Muay Thai, French Savate (kickboxing), Filipino Kali-Eskrima, and Indonesian Pencak Silat as well as Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do, and of course Karate-TaeKwonDo, as it was sanctioned under the U.S.K.A. at that time. Mr. Ballinger's initial introduction to the F.M.A. (Filipino Martial Arts) was with Guro Bruce Ogle head of the Indiana Kali-Silat Academy of Indianapolis, IN. Mr. Ballinger immediately took to what Guro Ogle had to offer and ran with it, later training with many great F.M.A teachers such as Guro Dan Inosanto, Remy Presas, Herman Suwanda, Leo Gage, George Dillman and many others. Upon leaving Mr. Armstrong's Karate Dojo in 1991, Mr. Ballinger continued to train and study and preserve the F.M.A as much as possible, later on making contact with Al Mckluckie and Kim Satterfield in Fort Wayne, IN where he learned and studied Inayan Serrada Eskrima, and Russian Systems. Later, he moved back to Muncie after several years away and hooked up with Guro Mike Casto of Louisville, KY (www.impactacademy.com). Mr. Ballinger has attended many seminars over the years. Recently Mr. Ballinger has re-connected with his first teacher, Guro Bruce Ogle. He is now under the umbrella of his teacher, has been given permission to teach, and has the honor of Guro status. |
