Shorin-Ryu has been dated back 600 years ago from the town of Shuri, Okinawa. Soken “Bushi” Mastsumura and Hohan Soken are considered to be the Fathers of our system. Classes How often? We offer classes 5 days per week, with Private Lessons anytime. Do you have Adult only classes? Yes, we have solely adult Traditional Martial arts, and adult full contact kickboxing. Do you have Children only classes? Yes, our kids classes are broken up into two age groups. Tournaments Yes or No? Why? Yes and No. Once upon a time we supported state and national tournaments regularly. I personally feel that they are good learning experiences, however, at times students get too wrapped up in achieving trophies in the political field of tournaments and forget about the true meaning of training in the martial arts, or perhaps even their original purpose in training. Ratio of Children to Adults I would say about 60:40, 60% with the children’s classes. Introductory Course Do you offer an introductory course? We used to, however now we simply offer everyone that’s seriously interested in training two FREE introduction classes, without any obligation to enroll. Testing Fees How much? How often? We do require testing fees, however they are a minimal cost, not a big profit campaign. Fees range from $35 for Yellow belt and up to $95 for Black. Fees are to cover for certifications, New Belts, Awards, etc. Tuition How much? Children’s classes are approximately $55 monthly and adults from $65-$98 depending on the program you enroll in. Family Discount? Yes we have a up to four person family package. Do students sign contracts? Yes/No? How long? Yes and No, We have membership agreements from 6 – 36 months however we also offer a Non-agreement open rate, which is a bit higher cost. Other Costs Uniforms, etc. We have a full range equipment from our catalogs, with a wide range of prices available. Instructor Certifications Rank, etc. Shihan – 4th Dan Black Belt – 27 years experience Biography Mr. Robert Stigall started his martial arts journey at the age of nine with Sensei Sonny Johnson, (who is currently teaching at the YWCA). Mr. Stigall is currently a 4th Degree Black Belt in the art of Shorin-Ryu. He has fully focused his efforts on one area, and is being true to this art by preserving as best he can the tradition and philosophies of his system. At the age of 16 he started training in full-contact Kickboxing in which he became very competitive. Mr. Stigall has attended a few seminars during his 27 years of training, learning various bits and pieces of other systems, such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, weaponry, and several other forms of self-defense combat fighting. He doesn’t claim to be an instructor in these other forms or systems, however he is very educated in this manner. He feels that you should only claim to be an instructor in one system, when you have devoted your whole life to that system. That is the system you know. Mr. Stigall has been a eight time State fighting champion, 2 time National fighting champion, and a U.W.M.A.S. (United World Martial Arts Systems) Kickboxing champion as well as capturing several kickboxing championships with the PKC.
